The Guy

Born in Annapolis. Forged in Baltimore. Perfected in Austin. Stevie started out in 2014 on the cobblestones of Fells Point, where there's live music seven nights a week and an audience that will absolutely tell you if you're bad. He wasn't.

He fronted the Stevie Matthews Trio, Analog Kids, and a band genuinely named Struggle Bus, which tells you everything about his sense of humor and nothing about his playing. He even did a stint on drums for The Ready's, because apparently one instrument wasn't enough of a personality trait.

A decade of all-request bar gigs taught him two things: how to play basically everything, and how to read a room like a bedtime story. The whole time he kept writing and recording originals, playing every instrument himself, because the cheapest bandmate is the one in the mirror.

In 2019 he moved the whole operation to Austin, TX, the live music capital of the world, where being "pretty good at guitar" is the local minimum wage. He teaches, he gigs, he writes. And he fits right in, which is saying something.

Analog Kids, Vol. 1

The band era. Loud, tight, and recorded back when "lo-fi" was an insult.

Memory Unseen

I played every instrument. I also judged every note. Democracy is overrated.

The Lessons

100% online, 100% anywhere in the US. I teach guitar lessons remotely over Zoom, so it doesn't matter if you're down the street in Austin or three time zones away in Seattle. The lesson works exactly the same. No travel, no studio address, just a link and a guitar.

Ages 6 to 86. If you can hold a guitar, I can teach you. If you can't hold a guitar, that's lesson one.

I've been playing guitar for 24 years, and for the last 11 it's been my full-time job: singer, songwriter, performer, and most of all, teacher. I was skeptical of online lessons at first. Not anymore. I've got my own equipment, piano, and visual aids set up for screen-sharing, so the lesson experience holds up just as well as sitting across from me in a room. No cookie-cutter curriculum, no "Hot Cross Buns" purgatory. Every plan is built 100% around what you actually want to play.

After every lesson I send you notes by email: what we covered, plus any diagrams or charts you'll want to practice with. Want to learn Wonderwall? Great. Want to learn literally anything else? Even better.

★★★★★

"Stevie is an excellent teacher. He took the time to understand my goals for learning the guitar and created a curriculum to guide me in that direction. I would highly recommend taking lessons from him!"

Do you teach students outside of Texas?

Yes. Every lesson happens online over Zoom, so I teach students in every state. Austin's just where I happen to live. If you've got a guitar and a Wi-Fi connection, you're close enough.

What skill levels do you teach?

All of them. Some of my students are holding a guitar for the very first time during the intro lesson. Others have played for years and just need a shove in a new direction. Both are welcome. Neither will be judged.

What do I need for an online lesson?

A guitar, a device with a camera, and a decent internet connection. That's it, I bring the equipment, the visual aids, and the screen-sharing setup on my end.

What do the lessons cost?

Depends on the lesson length you want, how often you want to play, and scheduling. Shoot me a message and I'll give it to you straight, same day. An actual answer from an actual human, not a quote form.
